Once the risk of frosts has subsided, it’s time to bed out your plants in broken down and well worked soil so the roots can take hold. Use a growhouse, a cover, film or a cloche tunnel to protect against the elements.

Protective equipment for tomato growing

There are as many ways to grow tomatoes as there are varieties.

Green Starter Tomato cones have been specially adapted to grow on young tomato plants once they have been bedded out. With a conical shape and wide opening at the top for ventilation and aeration, they are an effective way to grow on young plants, increasing the temperature by 5° C. Highly resistant and easy-to-use they can be stacked after use ready for the next season.

- Specialist tomato growhouses promote growth by creating an ideal microclimate for developing healthy plants and increasing yields. With a Tomato Greenhouse you can protect 3 or 4 tomato plants and avoid mildew, the fungus that thrives in warm damp conditions.

- If you are growing ten or more young tomato plants, use a Tomato Cover to protect them. This fleece hood covers each tomato plant individually to encourage growth and protect even the most fragile plants against damage from the elements.

-The Tomatotube will help your plants grow more quickly. Made from clear yellow, UV treated, 50 micron polyethylene, the tube works like a greenhouse, speeding up growth and increasing the yield of plants. The film is perforated for ventilation and also reduces the risks of disease. The Tomatotube is easy to set up – simply cover the tomato plant and attach to the support at the top.

Tomatex fleece is also suitable for growing tomato plantsBreathable and water permeable, the best ventilation and moisture conditions for healthy growth are guaranteed. Protecting your plants from the damaging effects of rain, wind and snow, this fleece is a good source of insulation.

-  Tomatoes can also be grown in a cloche tunnel with a metal structure. This extends the fruit bearing period by approximately one and a half months and reduces risks from the weather; very little watering or weeding is needed and yields will be good. Create your own tunnel, suitable for growing very tall plants, with Tomato tuteur double hoops, Tomato Film and clipsThe forcing film is easily attached to the hoops which should be set one metre apart.

All you need to do now is decide which of the many delicious tomato varieties there are to plant. The garden is glowing in anticipation
